Review of live perfomance
- Brian Jones Massacre in Chapel Hill, NC, sometime in September 2005 - by Christopher
J. Dott
The show didn't disappoint most people there as they were looking for something to happen like in the movie. It started out with his band (all different guys than the movie and unfortunately no tambourine player) all onstage, guitars on, waiting for him for like 15 minutes. You could tell that they were all getting impatient and pretty pissed off. He finally showed up, shirtless, and was completely hammered. His voice was shot, partly, he said, due to the fact that it was about 105 degrees in the bar and also because of all the shows they'd been doing recently. Except for that the tunes sounded decent but between songs whenever he talked he slurred and basically came off like a drunk.
We didn't last long. It's a great dark club with a kick ass built in sound system, like a small CBGBs, but the place was jam packed and really hot and uncomfortable. Most people there were waiting to see a freak show - in fact, a couple of jarheads behind us were yelling stuff out like "Go back to L.A.!" just to get a rise out of him. Pretty lame, made it like a freak show. Plus we'd been waiting a long time and were getting hammered ourselves with a 30-minute drive home. Turns out he played for over three hours. At one point, supposedly, he got pissed at his drummer and kicked him off stage but I guess the guy eventually came back.
Hence, my conclusion of BJM is enjoy the movie but don't buy into the greatness that is Anton. Unless maybe I'm missing something. That being said, the Dandy Warhols are a safer investment. I have one of their records, "Thirteen Tales From Urban Bohemia", and like it a lot more that the BTM. It's got that single "Bohemian Like You" which I think is a great tune. They're a bit more upbeat and a lot more stable.
